On Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of March 2000 from 9am to 5pm, a
"Peoples Conference" will be held at the University of Adelaide in South
Australia, to explore the implications of the proposed NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP
for South Australia.

The aims of the conference are:

-to educate the South Australian and broader community on the three SA
waste dump proposals.

- to consider the wider implications of disposing of nuclear waste

- to provide a catalyst for far greater media attention and public interest
in the issue of appropriate storage of nuclear waste in both Australia and
overseas

To reach as wide a public audience as possible the Peoples Conference
Committee will establish an on-line live audio link-up and a chat room for
the duration of the conference. Anyone unable to attend the conference in
person will, using any modern computer, be able to listen to the dozen or
so keynote speakers (including Senator Nick Minchin - Minister for
Industry, Science and Resources, Dr. Marcis Kurzeme - General Manager of
Operations Pangea Resources Australia, and Dr. Helen Caldicott - author,
activist, 1985 Nobel Peace Prize Co-winner). They will also be able to ask
any questions to our chat room, and potentially receive answers directly
from the speakers. We are indebted to Virtual Artists <www.va.com.au> for
generously donating their real audio server, without which the live audio
stream would not be possible.

In order to make the live audio link and the chat room a success we need to
attract a diverse audience from around the world, and as you are no doubt
fully aware the best way to do this is to use the world wide web. Thus we
are asking you and/or your organisation to consider participating in the
event in the following ways:

- forward this email to as many individuals, groups, lists, etc. as possible

- visit our website, especially the LIVE AUDIO LINK-UP page for audio software

- reply to this email if you have any questions, suggestions, or would like
to get involved in any aspect of the conference

- place a link from your site to ours informing visitors of the live link
up and chat room available on our website (we are more than happy to
provide technical assistance with this if you require it). In exchange we
will run a link to your site and advertise your issues in whatever way we can.

For more information on the Peoples Conference (including details of the
speakers, the terms of reference, the proposed dump sites, the live audio
link up and chat room, and much more), visit our website:

        www.adhills.com.au/peoplesconference

The Broadsheet attached to this email lists the three South Australian
waste dump proposals, some broader aims of the conference, and some contact
details.

We hope you feel as passionately about the proposed dump(s) as we do, and
look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Aylen,
Internet coordinator of the Peoples Conference Committee
