17th March 2000
Dear No New WOmen's Prison Campaign Supporter

I am writing to you on behalf of the No New Women's Prison Campaign
Coalition (NNWPC) a group of over 80 organisations and individual
supporters who were instrumental in lobbying for and achieving, the current
NSW Select Committee Inquiry into the Increase in the Prison Population.

As you will no doubt be aware, in addition to calling the Inquiry the NSW
State Parliament last year voted to suspend building of the 300 bed Windsor
gaol for women, due to overwhelming public outcry about the increased
incarceration of women in the state.

Despite the moratorium being unanimously voted for by the Opposition, and
entire Uppper House Cross Bench however, the government has declined to
suspend the tendering or construction process.

We are organising a demonstration against the government's refusal to
acknowledge the community and it's own House's opposition to the expansion
of the incarceration for women.

We would be honoured if your organisation would accept our invitation to
attend the demonstration to be held on

          Monday 27th March 2000
          1pm
          Parliament House, Macquarie Street.

Please note that Ms Annie Madden from the NSW Users and Aids Association;
and Ms Ann Symonds (former Labor LMC) have accepted invitations to speak.
We have also approached Opposition Corrective Services Minister Mr Brad
Hazzard; MLC Richard Jones (who moved the amendment for the moratorium in
the Upper House;) Mr Tony Vinson (former Commissioner of Corrective
Services) and Mr Northcott (Law Society President), to be part of this action.

Your attendance at the NNWPC demonstration would be greatly appreciated and
would be invaluable in showing government that the community does not want
another women's prison.

If you are unable to attend on the day, would you kindly consider lending
your support and the your organisation's name to the NNWPC campaign by
sending a letter, email or fax of support to the address below.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Mr John
Murray (address below).

Thank you for your time,

Yours sincerely,
John Murray
