The 'Dispossession of Women' outlines the argument for why women's
oppression is not a 'natural' condition based on our biology. Women have
not always been an oppressed sex. In fact the earliest human communities
did not know women's oppression - or private property, class division or
the state.
This is of tremendous importance to the fight for women's rights today, a
key task of which is to combat reactionary ideas which present the social
position of women as 'normal' and ahistorical, and therefore unchangeable.
