Background:
In 1997, Alison Thorne, a leader of the local AEU branch at Northern
Melbourne Institute of TAFE and two fellow unionists were retrenched in the
middle of a bitter industrial dispute and replaced by low paid casual staff.
The branch stopped work, branded the action a union busting provocation and
established the NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee. The case ended up before
the Discrimination Panel of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals
Tribunal. The ruling criticised NMIT for discriminating against unionists
and set an important precendent for all workers by expanding the definition
of protected industrial activity. The dogged resistence of the NMIT
Unionists Campaign sent a powerful message to management that a group of
workers were prepared to stand up to the ongoing harassment and
intimidation. The NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee is very proud of this
achievement. But, there is still a hefty legal bill to pay. You are invited
to celebrate the achivements of this struggle and help clear the debt at
this last ever function hosted by NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee. Be
there!
