Occupational Health and Safety=20
as an environmental justice issue
On Wednesday May 3rd, Earth Worker, the all union green caucus, held a
forum in Melbourne to explore the question of how Occupational Health and
Safety, or O,H & S, is an environmental justice issue. Today on Earth
Matters we're going to hear from just a couple of the speakers who look at
the industry pollutants and hazardous wastes that face workers, communities
and environments, and what unionists and environmentalists can do about
them. Mark Broomhall is a painter by trade.

Every year in Australia 500 workers die from a traumatic injury at work,
with another 2,500 dying from exposure to hazardous substances. According
to Pat Preston of the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union
(CFMEU), there's probably no activity in the construction industry that is
free of potential exposure to hazardous substances.

Pat believes that it's the right of any worker to have information about
the materials they use at work including their chemical contents, their
health effects and how they should be disposed of. Over the years unions
have taken action on industrial chemicals affecting workers and local
communities. For example, in Streaky Bay in South Australia the union
stepped in to investigate the use of pesticides against ants.

Reef Watch: community monitoring of S.A's reefs
Information and data is a key element in knowing just how to care for an
environment. Reef Watch is a community based monitoring group that's been
looking at the reefs of South Australia. Sheralee Cox is Reef Watch's
Project Officer, and today she joins us on Earth Matters.
