The sellout show of the Sydney Festival returns for one night only. "One
Word... WE" is a great audio visual production spanning 50 years of the
union, environment, peace & civil rights movements. First performed at the
Maleny Festival, an updated and longer version returned to and filled the
New Theatre in Newtown in January.
"We Shall Not Be Moved is an old union song from the 1930s. Of course it
used to be a gospel song, Jesus is my Captain, I will not be Moved. We
Shall Overcome is another union song which started out as a gospel song, I
Will Overcome. But the unionists on the picket lines made a significant
change, just one word. Instead of 'I will be saved and to hell with
everyone else', they sang 'we', that wonderful first person plural...one
word, WE!" (from the stage show, One Word... WE!)
Pete Seeger (who recently turned 80) wrote many of the anthems of political
protest including Where Have All the Flowers Gone, If I Had a Hammer and
Turn! Turn! Turn! With others he wrote songs such as We Shall Overcome,
Wimoweh, Guantanamera while Seeger also recorded and spread the music of
Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. Seeger's songs have been recorded by many
artists including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Peter, Paul and Mary,
Sweet Honey in the Rock, Aretha Franklin, and many many more.
Once the most boycotted, banned and picketed singer in US history, the 80
year old Seeger contiues to sing out for peace, justice and the
environment. One Word...WE! celebrates his life, time, friends and music
from 1949 to the present. So come on! Join the One Word...WE! cast of
actors singers and musicians in a celebration of the battles, the
victories, the emotions and the stories that record the achievements of the
collective 'WE' during the twentieth century.
`If you're looking for a great night out and a rev-up of your commitment to
progressive causes, Maurie Mulheron's One Word... WE! has it all. One
Word... WE! brings the victories and emotions of C20th struggles alive.'
- Lee Rhiannon, Greens member of the NSW Upper House
The Greens are delighted to present this return performance of One
Word...WE!
