Dear colleagues, The following letter is being sent by snail mail to organisations on our contact list. Because we are lacking some postal addresses, it needs also to be circulated widely by email. This is an ambitious venture requiring a coalition working party with appropriate expertise and resources which I hope we can put together in the next few weeks. I would welcome suggestions for a venue and speakers. It would be great to get some visiting speakers, for whom we can provide billets, but we will not be able to fund any travel. CONVENTION ON GLOBALISATION, NOVEMBER 2000 We invite organisations to participate in convening a landmark Western Australian Convention on Corporate Globalisation in November. Our goal is to bring together groups which recognise the dangers of the world movement towards global corporate control and its impact on our environment, human rights, labour standards, women, democracy, food and water quality. We hope to strengthen networks between groups whose interests and concerns are related to, or rooted in, the global conflicts about economics, environment and justice. Since formation in 1997, our non-party-political StopMAI (WA) group has convened public meetings, seminars and other public activities against the proposed MAI treaty and related trade and investment initiatives in the WTO, APEC and other international forums. Speakers at our meetings have included radio presenter Liam Bartlett, TLC Secretary Tony Cooke and civil liberties campaigner Bevan Lawrence as well as supportive academics. If you wish to participate in organising a broad-based November convention, please reply to this letter before 28 July. However, an early expression of interest is invited before our monthly meeting, 2 pm on Saturday 24 June, which you are welcome to attend - at the rear of 53 Wood Street, Fremantle (near Stack Street).
