RECONCILIATION: BRINGING WORLDS TOGETHER

Indigenous women from Guatemala and Australia share their stories and
strategies

Wednesday 12 July 2000 at 7pm

Indigenous people are 60 percent of Guatemala's population. Yet - like
Indigenous Australians - they are fighting a system that denies their
rights and their culture. Guatemala is now recovering from a 36 year
civil war that devastated Indigenous communities. Reconciliation and
truth-telling are as central to Guatemala's national healing as they are
to Australia's.

Juanita Batzibal and Merdada Castro are Mayan Indigenous women working on
Indigenous rights and identity with Community Aid Abroad-Oxfam's
Guatemalan program. They are visiting Australia to make connections with
Indigenous Australian communities - their two struggles have much to
learn from each other.

Come along to free public forum featuring Juanita and Merdada, along with
Joy Murphy, elder of the Wurundjeri people and Monica Morgan,
representative of the Yorta Yorta people.
