"Virtual Universities"=20
Testing quality in Australian Higher Education
Produced by Stan Correy=20
---------------------------------------------------------
It shakes the foundations of a few of the cornerstones of Australian life:
What is a University? Who decides, who sets the standards? How do you
keep up quality in education when the idea is to get rid of buildings and
libraries and teachers. And it will even challenge the traditional
notion of the teacher and how we are taught. Inspiring wisdom, knowledge,
and intellectual skills in young people may move away from the hallowed
teacher-student dynamic.=20
Australia is already in the education business, making billions a year
from overseas students. Universities, still strapped for money, think
they can make some more money by selling their courses Online to
undergraduates and to those people seeking extra qualifications . And
competition is fierce. There are more and more publicly funded
E-universities, for example. And also knocking on Australia=92s door wanting
a piece of the education dollar are the corporate Universities. These are
mainly an American phenomenon, where businesses such as MacDonalds set up
their training courses as a University, in this case called Hamburger
University. There=92s also one called Suits, where people do degrees in=
suit
making. These sorts of training centres are not allowed to operate in
Australia as Universities=85.yet. There are also private companies wanting
to start up E. Universities and sell their degrees in Australia.

IS THIS THE END OF MUSIC AS WE KNOW IT?
In this special Background Briefing, Tim Ritchie, DJ and popular ABC
broadcaster investigates the future of music.
All the musics of the world, from Killing Heidi to Mozart are now at your
cyber beck and call, and - with new technology - they're almost free,
liberated from the grip of big companies. Just as you no longer have to own
a monastery to write a book, you no longer have to have a record company to
get your music out there.
Copyright is virtually impossible to control, and you can make your own
radio station. So what next?
