The S11 Alliance, which is organising for a huge rally against the World
Economic Forum in Melbourne on Monday, September 11, is holding a two-day
teach-in.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone concerned about corporate
globalisation to discuss ideas, strategies and alternatives.
The event is being held at Trades Hall, corner of Lygon and Victoria sts,
Carlton, on Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6.
The draft agenda includes:
Saturday
9am: Registration
9.30am: Plenary on "What is globalisation, what is the WEF?"
10.45am: Workshops, including ones on free trade agreements, IMF and World
Bank, women and globalisation, globalisation and indigenous people,
globalisation--what did Karl Marx say?, resisting global capital from the
1880s onwards, videos.
1.30pm: Plenary on "How does globalisation affect us--Australian
perspectives".
2.45pm: Workshops, including ones on the racism of globalisation,
globalisation and Somalia, globalisation the environment and the Global
Free Logging Agreement, asylum seekers in a "borderless" world, "dinki-di"
multinationals and the WEF, capitalism activism and violence.
Sunday
9.30am: Plenary on "Resistance to globalisation, globalisation from below".
10.45am: Workshops, including Asking we walk--the Zapatistas, Seattle
eyewitness account, democracy globalisation and popular movements in Latin
America, resisting genocide--Tibet and the World Bank, globalisation and
internationalising community campaigns, Indonesia and the struggle for
democracy, non-violent direct action, policing democracy--the media protest
and public opinion, international workers' revolution--is it possible?, do
we need violence to change the world?
1.30pm: Plenary on "Where do we go from here?"
The cost is waged: $15 or $10 a day, unwaged: $7 or $5 a day, high school
students $2.
Childcare is available if booked in advance. The teach-in is wheelchair
accessible.
