Lead speakers on themes
Richard Leaver - Senior Lecturer, School of Political and International 
Studies, Flinders University
Mr Leaver specialises in international affairs, particularly the economic 
aspects of international relations, nuclear proliferation and 
non-proliferation and Australian foreign policy. He will provide an 
analysis of Australia's recent role in nuclear disarmament and future options.

Dr Frank Barnaby - Consultant, UK Oxford Research Group
Dr Barnaby is a plutonium and radioactive waste management policy 
specialist. He is a nuclear physicist by training who worked for the UK 
Atomic Weapons Research Establishment in the 1950s. His distinguished 
career in academia includes a term as director of the Stockholm 
International Peace Research Institute. He will provide an overview of key 
policy issues in relation to radioactive waste management.

Dr David Richardson - School of Public Health, University of North Carolina
Dr Richardson studies the long-term effects of human exposure to ionizing 
radiation and has been involved in research on the health effects of 
radiation exposure among workers at several US nuclear facilities. He is 
currently working at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 
Lyon, France, on a study of cancer among nuclear workers. His visit is 
timely as Australia is currently updating its radiation exposure standards.

Richard Broinowski - Honorary Professor, Department of Communication and 
Education, University of Canberra
Richard was a diplomat for 34 years, is a lawyer by training and is a 
current affairs commentator and legal consultant. He is writing a full 
length book which will look at nuclear safeguards. He will provide an 
overview of the links between nuclear technologies and proliferation risks 
and the challenges these pose.
