Forum: Georg Lukacs' Defense of 'History and Class Consciousness'.
Sunday 20 August, 2pm @ New International Bookshop
Trades Hall, Cnr Lygon and Victoria St
Georg Lukacs remains one of the most important Marxist philosophers of the
twentieth century; History and Class Consciousness his most significant
work. Its publication generated immense controversy within a Stalinised
communist movement. In response to his critics, Lukacs wrote a spirited
defense that was never published. Discovered many years later in the Moscow
archives, the manuscript reveals that he did not retract his views.
Seventy four years after it was written, Lukacs' Defense of History and
Class Consciousness is now available in English. To mark the occasion, NIBS
is holding a forum on Lukacs' life and work with Geoff Boucher of the
University of Melbourne and Andy Blunden, the convenor of the
Hegel-by-hypertext website.
