Warlpiri Women Dancing
Community Education & Performance Tour

Elders from the Warlpiri Community in Central Australia are coming to
the City of Darebin to talk about the land, the dreaming and a unique
project they are undertaking to pass on their knowledge to the children.
They will also be doing a performance at the Great Darebin Music Feast.

Due to the extraordinary rapidity with which Warlpiri communities have
been subjected to contact with non Aboriginal Australia, both the
language and culture have taken an enormous battering. The presentation
at the public meeting is about a project to compile traditional Warlpiri
stories and knowledge to form the basis of a school curriculum program
to be taught by Warlpiri teachers in Warlpiri schools. There is an
element of urgency about the work because today's Elders are really the
last generation to have much of the traditional knowledge that has been
passed on from generation to generation for centuries. Senior people are
saddened by this and have been very excited to be involved in an attempt
to record their stories and songs for future generations of children.
Come and hear these women talk about the work they are doing.

Whilst in Melbourne, the Walpiri women will also share their culture
through an outdoor performance.
