ACTU WOMEN GET TOGETHER
On August 21st & 22nd, trade union women from around Australia met in
Adelaide for the inaugural ACTU Women's Congress. While debate ensued as to
whether it was in fact the first ever such gathering, there's no doubting
this was definitely a significant occasion which looks likely to be added
to the annual trade union calendar. The event was attended by a number of
workplace delegates from around Australia, as well as the 'top brass' women
of the union movement. MICHELLE HOGAN [Asst Secretary, United Trades &
Labour Council of SA] was one of the organisers of the Congress & she
reports on what went on.

UNION WOMEN CALL ON HOWARD TO ACT OVER PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION
Delegates at the ACTU Women's Congress in Adelaide (see previous story)
called on John Howard to act on recommendations of a Human Rights & Equal
Opportunity Commissioner's Report into Pregnancy Discrimination. The report
came out 12 months ago & not one of its 46 recommendations have been
implemented. LISA HEAP is AEU Women's Officer & represented the ACTU at the
ILO on the issue of pregnancy discrimination.

NEW ZEALAND'S NEW INDUSTRIAL LAW
Big changes are afoot in NZ with the passing of new industrial legislation
(the Employment Relations Bill). The new law replaces the notorious
Employment Contracts Act (ECA) of the former National government &, while
criticised by many as not going far enough, is a significant step back
towards unions and worker rights under the current Labour/Alliance
Coalition government. And - possibly as a sign of the changing times - the
'rebel' NZ Trade Union Federation (NZTUF) plans to re-unite with the peak
body NZ Council of Trade Unions (CTU), after 7 years apart. The NZTUF broke
away from the CTU in 1993, when a number of mostly blue collar unions left
in disgust at the peak body's failure to mobilise workers in protest
against the ECA & the National government. MICHAEL GILCHRIST is Secretary
of the NZTUF & he explains the current climate among unions in NZ.
