S11, ANTI-GLOBALISATION AND VISIONS FOR SOCIALISM Organised by Workers Power Melbourne Public Forum and Discussion Monday 28 August - 7.00pm Meeting Room 1, Lesley Clucas Lounge Level 4, Building 12, RMIT Near corner Swanston & Franklin Sts The growing movement against global capitalism is often clear what it is against (corporate power, ecological destruction, increasing global inequality), but is less clear about what it is for. Within the broad anti-globalisation alliances in Seattle, Washington, London and here in Melbourne, there have been socialists, anarchists, environmentalists, and those arguing for a return to economic nationalism. They all advocate very different solutions to the problems of capitalist globalisation, if they offer a solution at all. In this Workers Power forum, we point the way forward to a global socialist alternative. We present a socialist vision of equality, economic and environmental planning, social justice and cultural development. In doing so, we will discuss the necessity of workers taking political power, and democratically exercising that power through a system of workers councils. Finally, we will discuss the role to be played by the newly emerging generation of activists, who are untainted by the legacy of Stalinism and trade union defeats in the 1980s. It is these layers, we argue, who will be at the forefront of progressive social change in the years to come. If they are to fulfil their potential, they need to be won to a working class, socialist and internationalist perspective.
