Cohousing... Addressing the problem of social alienation and isolation in
the suburbs

Cohousing is a resident-initiated and designed method of housing development
with the singular aim of enhancing neighbourhood life. The street-scape of
a 25-house cohousing neighbourhood is based around a paved pedestrian path
instead of a wide asphalt roadway. Putting carparks at the end of the
"street" creates a safe place for kids to play and room for gardens and
shared open space. The "common house" is locus of shared facilities
established by the residents, and is where the weekly meal is shared by all
residents of the cohousing neighbourhood.

Modern Cohousing began in Scandanvia, where it is now common, and now there
are 100s of groups in USA and Europe, and groups forming all over Australia.
But really, cohousing just recreates the roles that neighbourhoods performed
a few decades ago.

A cohousing is established when a group forms through notices and ads in
local newspaper, with one thing in common: the desire to live in a strong
and healthy neighbourhood.

Merri Cohousing is one such group, formed to set up a cohousing in the
inner-Northern suburbs of Melbourne. We have an Eco-village theme, so the
houses will be built to best-practice environmental design, with maximum
winter sun access, solar hot water, etc.

Cohousing is one of the key steps towards Sustainability that our society
must take.
