For anyone interested in the environment, human rights international
development, economic rationalism, privitisation, or multilateral
investment, or come along to one or both of them. The Mekong damming issue
especially has to do with WTO and IMF - type conditional bank lending from

Community Aid Abroad Oxfam Australia
Spring 2000 Seminar Series
2pm-5pm, Saturday 14 & 28 October
Community Aid AbroadOxfam Australia will hold a seminar series on October
14 & 28, focussing on the effect of large mining and hydroelectric
operations on people's rights, livelihoods and the environment. The
theme of these seminars is "Building Bridges: Linking the environment to
people-centred development and social justice". Both seminars will be
held at Australian Volunteers International, 88 Kerr St, Fitzroy.
The first seminar, titled "The Effect of Mining on the Developing World",
will be held on Saturday 14 October from 2:00-5:30pm and will explore the
impact of Australian mining companies operating in the developing world.
Representatives from environment and development organisations will discuss
the effect of mining activity on local community development, employment
and the environment and suggest ways for improving the balance of this
relationship. Mining industry representatives will respond by outlining
what the industry is doing to address these issues.
The second seminar, "Water: Lessons Unlearned", will be on Saturday 28
October from 2:00-5:00pm. This session will explore the social and
environmental impacts of large-scale hydroelectric schemes, focussing on
the link between Australia's river management mistakes of the past and the
repetition of those mistakes in the Mekong region of South East Asia. The
seminar will also explore possibilities of viable alternatives to large
hydropower schemes.
The cost for each session is $6.60 (inc. GST) or $11 for both seminars. To
RSVP or for more information please call Louise Mooney on 9289 9444.
