Jabiluka update

Tuesday October 10th 2000
Jabiluka will again be on the agenda of the World Heritage Bureau and
Committee when they meet in Cairns, November 27th December 2nd 2000. The
World Heritage Committee has consistently expressed concern over the impact
of the Jabiluka uranium project on the cultural and natural values of
Kakadu. For the past three years both the Jabiluka traditional owners, the
Mirrar, and Australian environment groups have made representations to
World Heritage Committee meetings. Australia s leading indigenous agency,
the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), has lodged a
submission with UNESCO about Kakadu National Park. ATSIC lodged the
submission in support of the Mirrar traditional owners of Jabiluka and is
calling on the World Heritage Commission to list the park "in danger". The
submission can be viewed under "Issues" at: www.atsic.gov.au

In conjunction with Gundjehmi Aboriginal Corporation, national and state
environment groups have produced a postcard outlining concerns with the
Australian Government s management of our World Heritage areas,
particularly Kakadu. Contact Friends of the Earth on 03 9419 8700 or the
Australian Conservation Foundation on 03 9416 1166 for the postcards.

The Australian Conservation Foundation, Minerals Policy Institute and the
Wilderness Society will be present at the Energy Resources Australia AGM,
being held in Sydney on Thursday October 19th 2000. Contact Leanne Minshull
from the Wilderness Society for more information on 0417 675 518

Mining conglomerate Rio Tinto is now the majority shareholder of the
Jabiluka uranium deposit since taking over North Ltd earlier this year. Rio
Tinto is yet to make a public announcement as to whether it intends to
progress with the controversial project. There has been no work at the
Jabiluka minesite since September 1999, when Mirrar traditional owners
vetoed discussions on transport and milling of Jabiluka uranium ore at the
nearby Ranger uranium mine. Call Rio 03 9283 3333 and tell them you don t
want Jabiluka to go ahead.

Friends of the Earth Melbourne are co-ordinating a Jabiluka rally and
festival on Sunday November 26th meeting 2pm at the State Library, corner
Swanston & Latrobe Streets Melbourne.
