The Victoria Police have settled the civil claim brought by injured
Richmond Secondary College protesters after the baton charge by the Force
Response Unit on December 13, 1993.

Police attacked the protesters picket line as part of the Kennett
Government's attempt to break opposition to the schools closure.

The amount of settlement is confidential but the 30 plaintiffs are reported
to be very happy with the amount of the settlement.

The settlement follows the controversial decision of Assistant Commissioner
Neil O'Loughlin to drop internal disciplinary charges against 8 police,
arising out of the Ombudsman's investigation and report on the baton
charge. The charges were dropped in the lead up to the World Economic Forum
protests. Assistant Commissioner Neil O'Loughlin was in charge of the
police operation at the WEF.
