Dear colleagues

[To avoid crossposting, I am transferring names from this list to a
separate list of N25 participants as soon as each convention registration
is recorded. Please let me know if I am inadvertently doubling up on any
messages.--BJ]

FIRST 100 SEATS TAKEN
With a little over three weeks to go, Perth's N25 community convention on
globalisation has attracted over 100 participants, though this is still
well short of the 400 we are aiming for. The calibre of registered
attendees is, however, remarkably high--including eminent campaigners in a
variety of fields, highly qualified academics and other professionals, and
quite a few present and past parliamentarians both federal and state. A
number of participants will be travelling from Sydney and Melbourne.
Others, including businesspeople, farmers and church representatives will
be making their way from a number of WA country towns.

This week, a detailed information kit will be posted with the receipts to
all who have registered. The number of specialised workshops has been
reduced from 16 to 14 and it is hoped that no further reduction will be
forced by a shortage of numbers on the day.

One-page briefing sheets are now available on each of the workshops and can
be emailed in RTF format on request. (A list of the topics appears below.)

PUBLICITY
With the expert help of graphic designer Scott Ludlam of the Anti-Nuclear
Alliance, we have issued a new promotional leaflet and posters in A4 and A3
sizes, copies of which are available on request. We especially welcome
requests from groups willing to photocopy and distribute quantities to
networks, because we lack the funds to buy another big print run at this
stage.

Advertising will be modest because of necessary budget restraints, but
insertions will appear in most of the Community Newspapers early next week
and, subject to a viable response, will flow on into other local papers
including the Post Group and Fremantle Herald.

Media releases are being issued at one-week intervals, with predictably
little interest being attracted from mainstream media at this time. After
all, only two of our 15 principal discussions will be focusing on their
favourite subject of protesters vs the police in Seattle, Melbourne, etc.
Closer to the event, we have been promised an ABC interview and talk-back
with Liam Bartlett. I'll post specific advice of this when it is firmed.

FREE INFORMATION STALLS
The N25 committee has invited participating organisations to set up
information stalls and distribute literature adjacent to the main lecture
theatre theatre. There is no charge for this facility. However, if any
goods are to be sold from the stalls, the committee would wish to negotiate
a nominal fee.

LUNCHTIME ENTERTAINMENT
During the break, we will be entertained by the Working Voices Choir
presenting appropriate numbers, no doubt with some sing-along to aid
digestion.

SUPPORT FOR WORKSHOPS
All of the N25 workshops have attracted viable numbers to date, the most
popular being (in order) 'Challenges of Globalisation to Workers and
Options for Responding', 'Sustainable Economics', 'Globalisation--a Way
Forward for Australia', 'Agriculture, GM Foods and Consumer Choice' and
'Participatory Democracy: International, National and State'.

SOCIAL FUNCTION MOOTED
Preparations are under way for an evening social function for N25
participants with comedy entertainment provided through UnionsWA
sponsorship. This could be immediately after the Convention or might be
delayed a few days to enable folk to regather their energies.

IN CONCLUSION --
The N25 Convention is the year's most important and accessible event for
all who wish to update their knowledge and have a say on the most crucial
economic issues of our generation. Please (WA contacts), don't hang back
any longer--get your registration in and become part of WA's search for
answers. Yes, there is division in the community and between various
organisations, but N25 is a forum for ALL viewpoints, for better or worse.
Nothing would please our opponents more than a mediocre attendance at the
Convention.

Sincerely

Brian Jenkins
