The Campaign continues to observe the East Timor International Day of
Morning because, while it remembers only one massacre committed by the
Indonesian military (TNI) out of many, the day has been chosen by the East
Timorese to remember all East Timorese who lost their lives during the
TNI's brutal occupation.

CIET (SA) Inc calls on all to support the struggle for East Timorese
independence as it is not yet over. The TNI and its militias are still
active on the East Timor and West Timor border (as well as in the Moluccas
and West Papua).

In addition East Timor has been left in ruins by the TNI and its militias
and the courageous East Timorese need all the assistance that we can give
to help them to rebuild their shattered lives and nation.

It is important that we remind our political leaders not to resume military
cooperation with the TNI until it ceases its crimes against humanity in
East and West Timor, West Papua, the Moluccas and Aceh and ceases its
attempts to undermine the new democratic administration in Jakarta.

Europe, Britain and the US have resumed military cooperation and pressure
must be exerted so that this stops in order to bring about true peace in
the SE Asian and Pacific regions. The TNI is able to continue its criminal
and murderous activities in these regions because amoral political and
corporate leaders want to profit out of arms and equipment sales to the
Indonesian generals.

         NO MORE SANTA CRUZS
         NO MORE TNI GENOCIDE

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DELEGATE TO THE 4TH ASIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE ON EAST TIMOR
- DILI/BAUCAU 25-30 NOVEMBER 2000

Andy Alcock, CIET'S Information Officer, will be an Australian delegate at
the forthcoming Asia Pacific Conference on East Timor which will be held in
Baucau & Dili 25 - 25 November 2000.

The Conference will discuss new roles for East Timor solidarity
organisations given that East Timor is now a new nation. This means that
there are new political and economic considerations as the East Timorese
strive to rebuild their shattered nation and these have important
implications for solidarity organisations. Part of the Conference will
include a study ("immersion") tour.

This Conference has been a biennial event since 1994. Andy attended the
1996 conference in Kuala Lumpur which was invaded by thugs from the youth
sections of Malaysia's ruling government parties. Delegates were then
arrested by police, detained and later deported.

It is worth noting that CNRT President Xanana Gusmao and Foreign Minister
Dr Jose Ramos Horta were guests of the Malaysian Government earlier this
year. Present at a formal meeting of East Timorese and Malaysian leaders
were the Malaysian organisers of the 1996 Conference. They were given an
official apology for the high handed behaviour of the Malaysian authorities
in 1996.

We do not expect such dramatic events to occur at the Baucau Conference.
Instead, delegates will need to confront the problems being faced by the
East Timorese people as they rebuild their nation while the Indonesian
military and its militias continue their criminal activities on the East
Timor/West Timor border effectively preventing 130,000 East Timores
refugees from returning home.
