Rainforest Information Centre (http://forests.org/ric/gold/) (02) 6621 3294 ******************** Please pass this notice on. Thanks. RALLY IN MELBOURNE TO HALT PERSEVERANCE FROM FURTHER GOLD MINING - Save Timbarra, Goornong and Axedale! A festive rally will be held on Thursday, November 30 outside the Annual General Meeting of Perseverance Corporation Limited (see www.perseverance.com.au). Perseverance is currently seeking approval to open two new open cut gold mines in Victoria (Goornong and Axedale). The company is also negotiating the final agreement for the Timbarra Gold Mine in New South Wales (see www.nimbinaustralia.com/timbarra/). All three of these mines seek to operate using the highly toxic element, cyanide (as witnessed by the recent catastrophic cyanide spill into the Danube River). Come join us at a rally to discourage Perseverance from going any further with these plans. If you cannot attend the rally below, please send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] asking that they forgo their plans to purchase the Timbarra gold mine. (see sample below). Here's the details: PRE RALLY MEETING - Monday, November 27, 4PM at Friends of the Earth, Fitzroy (03) 94198700. To think creatively and organise our actions at the rally. This is a strong and peaceful, non-violent, creative gala-rally. So please bring ideas for street theatre and banners. Our aim is to shut all three of these gold mining projects down! Water Is More Precious Than Gold is our slogan. The meeting will be followed by a showing of the short campaign film, "Water Is More Precious Than Gold" (includes footage from the recent cyanide spill in Romania). RALLY - NOVEMBER 30, 8:30AM - 11:30AM @ The Tower, 360 Elizabeth Street. Please come on time so that we can greet those arriving for the meeting. 8:30 AM Meditation - If you can't make the rally, come to our short (10 minute) meditation on right action, compassion and vision of how to live in ecologically and socially enlightened ways. BRING puppets, banners, costumes, drums, instruments, placards, water, rainwear if need be, funny things, streamers, and so on. Remember that more than 78% of gold that's mined each year goes towards gold jewelry. And with over 34,000 tons of gold in the world's central reserves, there's already plenty of gold available for our use for some time to come. We say "Leave It In The Ground". STREET THEATRE - Let's be creative and have fun. We hope to see people in business suits and briefcase with chains made from $$ signs and jewels around the feet, hands and neck. For further information, call (03) 94198700 or (02) 66213294 or send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://forests.org/ric/gold/ This rally is being organized by the Alliance to Close Timbarra (NSW) , Rainforest Information Centre (Lismore) and Friends of the Earth, (Melbourne) Note - There are two flyers attached: an A4 to post as well as a smaller version for handing out. ********************* SAMPLE EMAIL To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Perseverance Corporation Limited At your upcoming AGM, please register our concern regarding your efforts to purchase the Timbarra gold mine. Timbarra is a unique high altitude wetland, home to at least 27 threatened species. The ancient sacred site of Timbarra Plateau is a Noah's Ark for wildlife becoming extinct elsewhere. Timbarra is situated at the headwaters of the Clarence River, one of New South Wales' largest and cleanest catchments that supports agriculture, aquaculture and a fishing fleet at the river mouth earning $30 million a year. Cyanide gold mining on the source of the Clarence risks introducing cyanide, heavy metals and other toxins into ground water, the food chain, agricultural and sea food products for local and overseas markets. We ask that your mining company not take on this project which faces much opposition from local members of the community. We ask that the only activity to take place at Timbarra is the rehabilitation of the already degraded lands. Please respect these lands and their inhabitants.
