Community campaign fights for jobs at Email's Brunswick Chef factory. Public
meeting 7.00 pm Thursday 30th November at Brunswick Town Hall

Hundreds of local residents, workers and union officials are expected to
attend a public meeting in Brunswick next week to protest against the
closure of the Email-owned Chef factory in Hope Street, Brunswick.

Australian Workers Union officials and members are joining with local
socialists and community activists to build a community campaign. Speakers
will include Bill Shorten, AWU state secretary, Carlo Carli, MLA Coburg
(ALP), a shop steward from the Chef factory, and Judy McVey from Socialist
Worker. Rod Quantock will chair the meeting.

Michael Reidie, member of the local branch of Socialist Worker, stated:
"With over 75,000 jobs lost in Victoria over the past decade, economic
rationalism has ripped the guts out of working class areas. We are
supporting a strong industrial campaign by unionists at Chef to save their
jobs.

"The 20,000-strong S11 protest in September showed the power that ordinary
people have when they unite. We hope to bring the spirit of S11 into
Brunswick with solidarity action in the region."

The public meeting, entitled "Stop the Jobs Massacre", will be held at 7pm
on Thursday 30 November, in the Brunswick Town Hall (Cnr Sydney Rd and
Dawson St).

Michael continued: "We know we'll get no support from the Howard government,
but we can't rely on the Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. He's letting down
everyone who voted against Kennett."

There is a strong feeling of unity across all sectors of the Moreland
community. Socialists have collected hundreds of signatures while
petitioning at Barkly Square shopping centre every Saturday morning.
