Melbourne historian Dr Bernard Barrett has written a report entitled "Beating up", analysing the role of the police and the news media at Melbourne's World Economic Forum protests. He examines the early media coverage of the protest plans from June to August 2000, which "beat up" an expectation of violence. He then examines all TV coverage of September 11-13 and finds that this footage depicts only punches and blows perpetrated by the police and none by civilians.
