PRESS RELEASE A Tour of Corporate Nuclear Melbourne The Coalition for a
Nuclear Free Australia has organised a rally to expose some of the major
companies involved in the nuclear industry. The Tour of Corporate Nuclear
Melbourne will be held this Wednesday, December 13 beginning at 1pm at
Flinders Street Station. The Tour will involve a march from the Flinders
Street Station to Rio Tinto (the new owners of the proposed Jabiluka
Uranium Mine in Kakadu). From here it will proceed past several banks with
major investments in uranium companies to the Uranium Information Centre.
The march will finish at Southbank at the offices of Western Mining. The
Coalition for a Nuclear Free Australia was recently formed to counteract
moves by the nuclear industry to expand its presence in Australia.
"Australia is one of the main targets for nuclear expansion. The global
nuclear industry intends to use Australia as a cheap mine for uranium and
as a cheap dumping ground for nuclear waste. If they can persuade us to
buy some of their expensive and dangerous nuclear generators they’ll
be even happier" said Coalition spokesperson, Hillary Grech. "The Howard
Government is supporting this nuclear expansion by promoting expansions in
uranium mining and nuclear power, and by agreeing to turn Australia into a
nuclear waste dump" Ms Grech said. "The companies that we will visit as
part of our Tour of Corporate Nuclear Melbourne are hand in hand with the
Federal Government in forcing Australia further down the nuclear path" she
said. "These companies are telling governments around the world what to
do. It is a case of nuclear corporate rule. Democracy doesn’t get a
look-in", she said. "And now we are facing a visit from a nuclear warship
while the Labor Premier indicates he will welcome the ship into Melbourne.
We will not tolerate a return to the 1970s when we had to fight to keep
nuclear ships out of our harbour and away from our homes" she said. "We
ask Premier Bracks to support the long-standing ALP policy against nuclear
warship visits and to revoke any permission for such ships to visit
Melbourne. If he doesn’t then we will have no choice but to stop the
ships ourselves" Ms Greche said. For further information phone 9440 7043
