PEACE BRIGADES INTERNATIONAL
Indonesia and East Timor Project
Volunteers Training, MARCH 26 to APRIL 3, 2001
Peace Brigades International (PBI) actively works to promote human rights
and nonviolent conflict resolution in zones of armed conflict. PBI has
established a long-term presence in parts of Indonesia and East Timor and is
currently seeking volunteers to carry out protective accompaniment and
conflict resolution work to protect human rights.
For interested volunteers, there will be an eight-day training held at
Commonground, near Seymour, Victoria, March 26th April 3rd 2001. The
training will include sessions on nonviolence, political analysis, reactions
to emergency situations, consensus decision-making, the concept of
non-partisanship, dynamics of life on the teams, and the ethical use of
privilege. PBI's training methodology employs participatory
exercises,role-plays, games, and personal reflection. At the end of the
week, each volunteer meets with the training team to evaluate their
suitability for the work, and joins our pool of available volunteers if
accepted. Scheduling for service will be negotiated individually. The
training for service in Indonesia and East Timor is held in English,
although role-plays include Indonesian and there will be an Indonesian
language assessment.
Who can be a PBI Volunteer?
PBI volunteers come from many different countries, backgrounds and
philosophical perspectives. They share a strong commitment to nonviolence
and a belief in the power of local people to create more peaceful and just
societies. PBI seeks volunteers aged 25 and older. Overseas volunteers must
be able to commit to a year of service. In addition to people with overseas
and/or human rights backgrounds, PBI is also currently seeking volunteers
with experience facilitating conflict resolution workshops to join a pool of
conflict resolution trainers for East Timor.
Before being accepted for the training session, all volunteers must complete
a detailed application accompanied by three references, followed by a
telephone interview. Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesian is required for
service in Indonesia and East Timor. Perspective volunteers may study
in-country to reach competency prior to joining the team.
