Hi All,
This is a leaflet produced by the Socialist Party in
Perth, WA, protesting against the unfair banking charges and in favour
of nationalising the banks to use their huge profits for the good of the
community and not just for the corporate rich. The Socialist Party looks
forward to anyone who would like to support this protest, or our
candidate Neil Gray in the WA State Election. Please e-mail Matthew
Davis on [EMAIL PROTECTED] if interested.

        SOCIALIST PARTY PERTH BRANCH
        VOTE 1 NEIL GRAY
Socialist Party candidate for Maylands on a Workers Wage

        Down With Bank Charges.

Massive increase om branches and services

        People Before Profits.

        A People's Bank Now.

Protest at: Commonwealth Bank, 8th Avenue Maylands - 12 Noon, Wed
7th Febuary

While people's incomes have been falling against inflation for
decades and personal debt has been rising (families are $10 000 deeper
in debt in the past year), the banks have been making record profits.
The Commonwealth Bank alone made $1.713 billion profit last year from
our debts and bank charges.

The Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Bank David Murray amassed
$1.84 million in wages in 1999. What about the share options, the
company car, the company paid lunches and other fringe benefits? But he
is not alone. David Morgan Chief Executive of Westpac pocketed over $30
million. That amounts to roughly $576 000 a week - all paid for by our
fees, staff cut-backs, branch closures, and interest payments.

While the community is told by company executives to tighten the
belt and accept a miserly 3% wage rise for 1998 for the good of the
economy, these same people have given themselves on average a 22% salary
increase.

It's one standard for us and another for them!

The Socialist Party says that this should not be the case. The
working class produces everything in society so why should we live in
poverty and degradation while the rich live it up on the benefits of our
labour. The banks should be made responsive to community needs. We say
the banks and all the large corporations should be nationalised so that
their huge resources can be used to develop society. Interest payments
on mortgages and loans can be reduced to the actual costs of maintaining
the banking system. At one stroke, this would reduce the costs to
families and small business operators. A democratic plan of production
can be drawn up, which will guarantee secure fulfilling employment,
education oppurtunities, protection for the environment, and adequate
pensions for all.

The Socialist Party is not like the other parties. We believe in
people's power - we rely on mobilising the community to fight for
socialist demands like the nationalisation of the banks for the good of
all. We don't wait to be elected as MP's in Parliament to fight for such
demands. We organise in the community now!

Only united action brings people together to acheive our goals. Join
the Socialist Party - the only party fighting for a better future! Phone
