Comrades
Last Friday's skate board rally in Melbourne organised by the newly founded
Young Socialist League was a great success. 150 young people - some as
young as 11 and 12 - rallied at the skate board park in Swanston St, heard
speeches, and marched/skated behind a "Skate boarding is not a crime" banne
and the YSL banner to the Town Hall.
Then there was more speeches, a spontaneous skate-in and chalkings of the
Council building. Despite the absence of police it was a peaceful rally -
or maybe because of the absence of police.
The mood was electric amongst a layer of young people most of whom had
never been on a rally before.
$72 was raised for the YSL and several people joined.
A meeting was held yesterday (Sunday) to discuss the next stage of the
campaign, including plans to meet the Mayor, attend council meetings on
this issue, and organise a second rally.
