From: Trudy Bray <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ABC INDIGENOUS NEWS Thursday February 15, 2001 Bacon acknowledges Tas Aboriginal treaty Tasmania's Aboriginal community says it is delighted Premier Jim Bacon has acknowledged the existence of a 170-year-old treaty designed to end conflict between black and white communities. The Aboriginal Legal Service has asked the Government to settle the treaty it says was agreed in 1831 between Aborigines and the Arthur Government, promising land and other benefits. The service's Ricky Maynard and Michael Mansell met Mr Bacon today to discuss the treaty. Mr Maynard says the community wants the treaty honoured, but is happy to wait until after the Government's Aboriginal lands handback bill is dealt with by the Parliament. "We thought it was an ideal time to raise it with him because of his support for the reconciliation package," he said. "And as I say, he's very supportive at arriving at some form of resolution." A spokesman for the Premier says Mr Bacon has pledged to consult on Aboriginal issues and will continue to do so. Mr Maynard says the Premier has recognised the existence of a treaty and Aborigines hope to progress the issue after Parliament has dealt with the Aboriginal Land Transfer Bill.
