Bacon acknowledges Tas Aboriginal treaty

Tasmania's Aboriginal community says it is delighted Premier Jim Bacon has
acknowledged the existence of a 170-year-old treaty designed to end
conflict between black and white communities.

The Aboriginal Legal Service has asked the Government to settle the treaty
it says was agreed in 1831 between Aborigines and the Arthur Government,
promising land and other benefits.

The service's Ricky Maynard and Michael Mansell met Mr Bacon today to
discuss the treaty.

Mr Maynard says the community wants the treaty honoured, but is happy to
wait until after the Government's Aboriginal lands handback bill is dealt
with by the Parliament.

"We thought it was an ideal time to raise it with him because of his
support for the reconciliation package," he said.

"And as I say, he's very supportive at arriving at some form of resolution."

A spokesman for the Premier says Mr Bacon has pledged to consult on
Aboriginal issues and will continue to do so.

Aboriginal groups urge Tasmania to honour 170-year-old treaty

Tasmania's Aboriginal community wants another meeting with Premier Jim
Bacon over a 170-year-old treaty on Aboriginal rights.

The Aboriginal Legal Service has asked the Government to implement the
treaty it says was agreed to in 1831 between Aborigines and the Arthur
Government, promising land and other benefits.

The service's Ricky Maynard and Michael Mansell met Mr Bacon yesterday.

Mr Maynard says the Premier has recognised the existence of a treaty and
Aborigines hope to progress the issue after Parliament has dealt with the
Aboriginal Land Transfer Bill.

"He's certainly going to take it on and consider it and has foreshadowed a
further meeting with Aboriginal delegates after the land transfer is
finished," Mr Maynard said.
