Free Suranga Tennakoon
Suranga Tennakoon is a refugee from Sri Lanka. He was held in Maribyrnong
Detention Centre until 12 January 2001, when he was transferred to
Melbourne Assessment Prison, and then to Port Phillip Prison. The only
explanation given was 'unacceptable behaviour' during the aftermath of the
suicide of his friend Viliami Tanginoa, to which he was a witness, in the
detention centre on 22 December 2000. The Department of Immigration and
Multicultural Affairs are holding Suranga without charges in a criminal
prison as an intimidation tactic to attempt to prevent him and others from
speaking out about the circumstances that lead to Viliami's death.
This is ARBITRARY IMPRISONMENT, with NO CHARGES,
and no opportunity for judicial review.
The Refugee Action Collective calls on Victoria's State Government to
refuse to hold Suranga in Port Phillip Prison any longer, and to refuse to
take any more refugees from Phillip Ruddock's detention centres.
