Trades Hall to join M1 protest

Thousands of trade unionists are expected to increase the number of M1
protesters blockading Melbourne's stock exchange after the Trades Hall
Council agreed to a mass stoppage of workers to join the protests on May 1.

The M1 protest, organised by a variety of student and social groups, had
been expected to be much smaller than the S11 campaign against the World
Economic Forum, but organisers now say the numbers may exceed those seen at
the world trade summit in September.

The M1 protesters plan to blockade several city buildings on Tuesday, May
1, to protest against globalisation and large corporations.

Targets include the stock exchange, the Rio Tinto building in Collins
Street and Western Mining headquarters at Southbank.

Although union organisers have pledged they will not join M1 protesters in
blockading buildings, it will be the first mass union march to be held on
May1 since World War II. Traditionally, May Day marches have been held on
the Sunday after May 1.

Trades Hall Council represents around 500,000 workers in Victoria and at
least 15,000 are expected to down tools and join the march.

Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union secretary Martin Kingham said
construction sites across the city would halt during the march and cleaners
in the stock exchange would also refuse to work.
