After its inaugural meeting Refugee Action Collective (WEST) has announced
that it will be organising a "Melbourne West contingent" to the National
Day of Action for refugee rights.

STATION, before we join the main rally in the city.

MELBOURNE RAC (WEST) KICKS OFF WITH A BANG!
Given the limited building we were shocked to have 27 people come to our
inaugural meeting for the Western Suburb Refugee Action Collective. The
meeting included local residents, refugees, students & staff from Vic uni,
a healthy contingent from Socialist Alliance (melbourne west) as well as
people originally from Egypt, India, Chile, Somalia and Papau New Guinea.
An information discussion was introduced by RAC activist Daniel and
followed by Louis who is a Western suburbs based refugee. The broad ranging
discussion covered the conditions of detention centres to the politics of
mandatory detention & temporary visas right through to globalisation and
immigration.
Tania Jorquera kicked off a brainstorming session which was full of
ideas.In the end we narrowed it down to some key priorities:
- The main priority was building a "Western contingent" to the June 3
National Day of Action; we are going to advertise to meet at Footscray
station at 11:30am on Sunday, have a speak out then catch the train in
together.
- Angela, Paul & John are helping to coordinate a weekly Saturday stall
in Footscray at 11:30am
- We will probably show an edited version of a doco on Wackenhut a week
or so after the June NDA.
- In the medium term we are looking at a Footscray based rally for
refugee rights
- In the long term we are looking at a major action at Maribyrnong,
possibly even involving a "Rock against Racism" or "Duff against
Detention"
- Vic Uni students & staff are also looking at organising campus forums
in the lead up to June 3
