Aston By-election 'Public Transport First' Campaign
Letterboxers needed!
Following the death of sitting Liberal MP Peter Nugent, there will be a
by-election in the Federal seat of Aston in mid July, 2001. The Aston
electorate includes Wantirna, Rowville, Knox, Bayswater, and Scoresby.
Aston is bang smack in the middle of the 'corridor' for the environmentally
destructive proposed Scoresby Freeway. The State and Federal governments
have committed $220 million each to build the freeway.
The 'Public Transport First' Campaign has been formed by environmental and
public transport groups to promote public transport solutions instead of
the Scoresby Freeway. The campaign will encourage Aston voters to give
their preferences only to parties which oppose the Scoresby Freeway.
The Public Transport First campaign needs people to help with letterboxing
in the Aston electorate. Cyclists would be particularly able to help in
this regard, as bikes are a quick way to do such a task. The more people
who volunteer, the less time this task will take.
Letterboxing days will be:
* Sat 9th - Mon 11th June (Wantirna, Wantirna South, Knox, Scoresby,
Heathmont areas)
* Sat 16th - Sun 17th June (Rowville, Knox areas)
* Late June/early July
* Polling day (Sat, July 14th) with how to vote cards
If anyone has time to spare during the week, we can fit them in too.
Transport can be arranged to these areas, with maps provided. Please
contact Hayden Jones at the PTUA on 9650 7898, or (0419) 54 11 99 or email
