Comrades
As you would have seen in yesterday's Age and heard on the radio the
Socialist Party is running a ticket for a council position on Melbourne's
City Council. Voting starts on July 2 and we need about 13% to get a seat.
Below is an article outlining our criticism's of the current council and
our alternative programme.
The SP has launched a $3,000 appeal to fund the election, clear debts and
get us ready for the next federal election. In the federal election we are
standing in Melbourne, Blue Mountains and Perth.

Putting People First in Melbourne
The Melbourne City Council is a rich person's club. It hands out dollups of
cash to the corporate world - last year it gave $75,000 to the World
Economic Forum, $100,000 to the bosses' federation VECCI, and $12 million
to consultants for a strategy as to how Melbourne should look in 2010.
On top of this the 9 Councillors took $18,000 in earnings each ($100,000
for the Lord Mayor) and claimed a quarter of a million dollars in expenses
on top!
Yet residents and small businesses in the area are neglected. Only $11
million was spent in total on all social services. Council has knocked back
a safe injecting facility. Council has expelled skate boarders from the
city centre taking away one of the few healthy, free pursuits young people
have.
The SP has promised to redirect spending so that each of the not-for-profit
child care centres in the area get an extra $100,000 a year. This would
lower their costs for parents and increase their standards.
We have pledged at least $12 million on new housing for students and low
income earners. This would create jobs and help ease the crisis in the
private rental market.
We will fight for free English as a Second Language classes for local
residents, taking up the slack left by the cuts of the Federal government.
We will support a safe injecting facility in the CBD to stop the scandal of
heroin deaths in the city.
We will end the rort whereby corporations get 2 votes each in Council
elections.
We will scrap the position of Lord Mayor and instead have a chairperson of
Council on the same pay as the other councillors and without the feudal
trimmings.
Leading our ticket is construction worker and well known activist Stephen
Jolly and our no.2 is local metal worker John Miczelovich.
Vote for our ticket in the election and help our campaign. Can you letter
box or door knock your street? Can you join our regular stalls in the area?
Can you give us a donation, no matter how small?
