Dear friends and colleagues,

Some much-needed careful analysis of the possible impacts of the General
Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) has been contributed by two
Australians, Richard Sanders and Peter Ellis.

The GATS is a worry because its negotiation was not affected by the Seattle
WTO breakdown and is proceeding rapidly. Australia's negotiators do not
seem to recognise (or care much for) the threat posed to our public
services in health, education, the ABC, etc.

Richard's Financial Review article (15 June) can be read online at
http://members.iinet.net.au/~jenks/Sanders.html

Peter's comprehensive workshop paper (16 Jun) is at
http://members.iinet.com.au/~peterell/gats.doc

The documents can also be located from a list of helpful
GATS references which I am developing at
http://members.iinet.net.au/~jenks/anddocs.html#G3
