A kaleidoscope of anti-capitalist struggles is breaking out across the
world. From the brilliant protests against the Free Trade of the Americas in
Quebec where anti-capitalists and workers joined forces again as they did in
Seattle 1999 to general strikes in Latin America and the fantastic M1
protests in Australia, our movement is growing and developing - and in the
process posing big questions about how to challenge the capitalist system.

At the same time, a growing anger at the immediate perpetrators of
neo-liberal policies - the Howard government - is intersecting with
increasing frustration and disappointment with Labor's failure to pose a
real alternative. How to connect with this deepening mood for change - for
example, through the formation of the Socialist Alliance - is a key task we
fact in building a new Left in Australia.

We know what we are against - a world dominated by the profit imperative
and insatiable corporate greed. But what are we fighting for and how do we
best organise to achieve a better world?

Marxism 2001 is a chance for hundreds of activists and socialists to debate
and discuss how to take our movement forward.
