Comrades,

Thanks to all who assisted the "Putting People First" ticket at the
Melbourne City Council elections. This ticket included Socialist Party
member Steve Jolly and trade union activist John Maciulis

The count of first preferences has now almost been completed

The "putting people first" ticket is expected to obtain about 500 to 600 votes.

This is around 1% of votes.

This result compares favourably with other left candidates for instance

"Socialist Alliance" around 210 votes

"Sustainable Youth" around 200 votes

"Active Local Progressives" around 100 votes.

and is around the same as the "Community First" ticket.

The final figures and results of distribution of preferences should be
available by tomorrow night.

During the campaign SP members and other supporters of the "Putting People
First " tickets distributed about 10,000 leaflets and in this way ensured
that voters had the chance to consider an alternative, policies that put
peoples needs first. SP members gained valuable experience in the Socialist
Party approach to election campaigns.

There was a huge field of 97 candidates for the 7 council positions.
Residents make up only about 1/3 of the electorate (the balance of the
electoral roll being business's and other non-residents). Some of the other
tickets spent $200,000 on campaign expenses. The "Putting People First"
spent just $600 including the $200 for deposits.

Given these circumstances the outcome is reasonable for a first foray into
Council elections and we are looking forward to the next challenge which is
contesting the seat of Batman at the Federal election. This federal seat
includes the Melbourne City Council area.

Jim
