Democracy Activists in Indonesia set alight with fire bomb
Resistance intiates vigil in solidarity

At 4am on July 22, a hunger strike protest in Lampung, Indonesia was fire
bombed by thugs. The thugs, suspected to be military in plain clothes,
threw petrol onto the tent in which the hunger strikers were sleeping and
set the tent alight. Several of those sleeping inside the tent were
severely burnt and some are still in hospital in a serious condition.

The hunger strike was initiated by pro democracy organisations such as the
People's Democratic Party (PRD) and the National Student League for
Democracy (LMND) along with local Catholic and Protestant student
organisations. The hunger strike was being staged outside a prison where
other activists were being held in detention for campaigning against the
attempts to return to power by the forces of the New Order Suharto
dictatorship. The hunger strikers were demanding free education, medical
and farming equipment along with subsidies on fuel and basic goods. They
were also demanding an end to forced privatisation of state owned companies
for the cancellation of Indonesia's foreign debt.

In light of these recent attacks on pro democracy activists in Indonesia,
Resistance has called an emergency 24-hour vigil out the front of Garuda
Indonesia in Collins Street, Melbourne, for Friday 27 July, starting at
12pm. As part of the vigil resistance members will be going on a hunger
strike to draw people=92s attention to what is happening in Indonesia.
