See "Facing the Music" and help to build a library in East Timor
Leftlinkers might be interested in a film night that I am organising
through my work at the National Tertiary Education Union.
The film is a documentary about the Music Department at the Sydney
University and the impact of budget constraints upon the Department and its
head. It follows the head's journey from cynicism about the role of the
union as she tries to manage her increasingly underfunded department, to
her whole-hearted participation on the picket lines during the last round
of enterprise bargaining.
The following are some reviews and information about the film, which
screened at the Sydney Film Festival and is now screening commercially in
Sydney and Canberra.
From the award-winning directors of Rats In The Ranks comes a compelling
and eye- opening look at what's really happening in our universities. In
particular, the University of Sydney's music department where Professor
Anne Boyd has been struggling with budget cuts and bureaucracy for a decade
or more. Despite her formidable determination, her passion for music and
commitment to higher education, she's reached critical mass. Forced to drop
staff and courses and pick up the phone to plead for private sponsorship,
she's not sure how she or her department can continue.
Review: [A] look at the human impact of the pressures on higher education.
Not necessarily promising territory but Connolly and Anderson have made an
inspired choice of subject ... As well as being highly entertaining, Facing
The Music will stimulate debate about the clash of rationalist policies and
academic ideals. Garry Maddox, The Sydney Morning Herald, June 2001
Some details:
Date Friday 3 August Please be there by 6:45 as the cinema is less than
precise about the session starting time at present.
Venue Cinema Nova, is located at 380 Lygon Street, Carlton in the Lygon
Court Shopping Piazza between Elgin and Faraday Streets. The entrance is up
the escalator at the Lygon Street end of the piazza, or via a lift in the
courtyard if required.
Refreshments will be served afterwards and film itself will be over around 9PM.
Tickets cost $20, and this will mean a substantial proportion will go to
APHEDA (the trade union movement overseas education and aid organisation)
after we pay the cinema for tickets and pay for the refreshments.
Please do not deal with the cinema about this event but deal directly with
me here. It is very rare for a film to come out about such issues. I hope
that you can attend. Feel free to bring anyone else you know who is
interested.
Please let me know if you will come so I can reserve ticket/s for you.
I look forward to seeing you there.
In Solidarity
