Subject: Alternative Administration - a student response to the
corporatisation of education at Melbourne University
Hello,
I've been contacting people who might be interested in the Alternative
Administration that the Student Union collective has planned for next week.
Below is a short description of the aims of the Alternative Administration,
which is a sustained and peaceful protest about the increasingly secretive
and corporate direction the senior management (under VC Alan Gilbert) is
taking the university.

details below and we can talk about media coverage. thanks.
The Alternative Administration which will kick off on August 6 (next Monday).
The idea behind the Alternative Administration is to create a well
organised, sustained and peaceful political action that will allow students
and staff to highlight their concerns about senior management's idea of
what Melbourne University should be.
The plan is to invite students and staff to join (enrol in) the Alternative
Administration. We will collect signatures in the style of a 'petition':
Members of the university community would be saying they don't approve of
Alan Gilbert's administration and it's agenda, and would rather be part of
a university that is not management centred and over administrated. This
would be a symbolic act - but could also be presented to senior management
as a strong vote of no-confidence in their corporate agenda. There will be
a place for students to lodge grievances, find out more about the
'Melbourne Agenda', and take back control of their education.
It will be outside the law library all next week (this venue might change,
depending on whether the university gets shirty) , and there will be
speakers on education issues (Gary Foley, Verity Burgman and others), and
musicians too.
