Timorlink Van Launch & Festival
Official Launch Date: Sunday 12 August, 12 noon
Venue: Brunswick Baptist Church, Brunswick, Melbourne
Speakers: Bishop Hilton Deakin, Helen Hill, Balthasar Kehi
Come along and network with a community of people working for a fair and
sustainable future for East Timor.
Timorlink is sending a van loaded with supplies to East Timor, via a month
long journey through the red centre of Australia.
The van will be launched from Melbourne during a festival of speakers,
food, drink and networking on August 12, 12 noon.
Beginning in Melbourne, Katrina & Crew will make their way, weaving through
towns and interviews and public talks, to Adelaide then Darwin, where the
goods will be shipped to Dili.
So far we have raised $1900 to cover petrol, registration and maintance
costs for the van and its load. Surplus money will go towards supporting
Timorese communities and cooperatives.
For example, Timorlink is currently after soccer balls and other sports
equipment to assist the youth soccer teams with their recreational
facilities. Timorlink also aims to purchase or collect donated quality
musical equipment such as instruments, amplification and recording
equipment for a Music & Cultural Resource Centre.
We also aim to establish links between Timorese craft makers and Australian
retailers to sell such things as Tais (traditional Timorese weavings). In
order to do this, we must purchase a stock of Tais at a fair price from the
Timorese to bring here to Australia. Funds raised will help this project
firmly plant permanent seeds for long-term sustainability for Timorese
communities.
