Socialist Alliance branches around the country have called solidarity
actions with the activists fighting the racist Public Order and Anti-Social
Conduct Act in the NT. With mandatory sentencing in full swing this attack
adds to the NT governments onslaught against indigenous and disadvantaged
people. This action is an important way for us to show opposition around
the country. See you there.

Labor moves further right than CLP on Law and Order Issues
"The NT Labor party has outstripped the ruling CLP in regards to the zero
tolerance policing approach" said Gary Meyerhoff, the Socialist Alliance's
candidate for Nightcliff. "People looking for an alternative to the CLPs
police state approach can now only turn to the Socialist Alliance. We are
the only entity in this election that has spoken out strongly against the
racist, repressive approach being taken in the NT."
"Labor has said that it will repeal mandatory sentencing. The Socialist
Alliance demand that Claire Martin pledges not to replace mandatory
sentencing with a new regime of 'sentencing guidelines.' Sentencing
guidelines is mandatory sentencing with a new jacket on. These guidelines
could even prove to be harsher than the current regime."
"The response to the drug issue is also very despairing. After twenty six
years of failure on the drugs issue, the Labor party wants to take the
Territory further down this track by doubling the size of the drug squad.
The Labor party fails to address the real issues behind illicit substance
use and their policy will further repress the users of illicit substances."
"To top all of this off, the Labor party plans to implement an 'unofficial
curfew' for young people. What is an unofficial curfew? This is an
appalling move by a Labor party that is desperate for votes. Only the
Socialist Alliance platform really starts to address some of the issues
faced by the Territories young people."
"Denis Burke may be saying that Labor will repeal the Public Order and
Anti-Social Conduct Act, however, the Socialist Alliance believe that this
is not the case. Only Senator Trish Crossin has spoken out against the law
and she is the Federal Senator, not a member of the Territory Labor team.
If you check hansard, the only amendment Labor tried to make to the Act was
to make it harsher towards drug users. Have they done a back flip on their
stance on this Act?"
The Socialist Alliance demand that Claire Martin also pledge publicly that
Labor will repeal the Public Order and Anti-Social Conduct Act.
The Socialist Alliance is organising a number of events to campaign against
the police state, racist approach of the CLP and Labor.
