(Apologies for cross postings!)
Sydney Resistance has called a high school walkout in support of refugees,
but everyone who supports the refugees is welcome to attend.
HIGH SCHOOL WALKOUT
Wednesday Sept 5th 12.30pm- Sydney Town Hall
Distribute this to all lists and young people that you know!!
People have no doubt heard about the 430 asylum seekers stranded off
Christmas Island, as well as the situation of the Bedraie Family, asylum
seekers from Iran who the racist Howard government are trying to deport. In
response to the escalation of inhumane, racist attacks by the Federal
government against refugees, Resistance is organising a campaign to mobilise
high school students to walkout of school in protest on Wednesday Sept 5
(the day before the likely attempted deportation of the Bedraie family).
BUT! Please don't feel it should be left to high school students - everyone
is welcome to join the protest, which will gather at Sydney Town Hall at
12:30pm and march on John Howard's office. So campus students, community
activists, and ANYONE concerned about the human rights of refugees, please
come along!
You can get leaflets, posters etc at your nearest Resistance centre:
Sydney City: 23 Abercrombie St, Chippendale (Ph: 9690 1977)
Sydney West: suite 1 -101 Argyle St, Parramatta (Ph: 9687 5134)
Sydney East: suite 7, 91 Oxford St, Bondi Junction (Ph: 9386 1799)
And don't forget - please forward this email, tell your
friends/workmates/class mates, spread the word! No one is free while others
are oppressed!
in solidarity,

High School Walkout called by Resistance
In response to the Australian government's outrageous treatment of the
Bedraie refugee family, high school students are planning to walk out of
school this Wednesday (5th September).
"Six year-old Shayan Bedraie has been subjected to what is in effect
psychological torture by the Australian government" said high school student
Lauren Carroll-Harris, one of the organisers of the walkout. The plight of
Shayan generated public anger over the treatment of refugees after ABC
screened footage of the disgraceful conditions inside the camps.
The Howard Government is likely to deport the Bedraie family as soon as next
week, showing its absolute lack of humanity.
"One Nation's racism has been resurrected by the Liberal government. In a
desperate measure to woo the far-right vote, Ruddock is ignoring basic human
rights.
"The recent case of the boat, stranded in limbo off Christmas Island
demonstrates the escalating crisis and the moral bankruptcy of the
government".
The socialist youth organisation Resistance is calling the walkout to
express its condemnation of Ruddock and Howard's racism. To encourage
students to walk out of school, Resistance high school members will be
holding a speakout outside Newtown Performing Arts High School at
8:20amtomorrow (Thursday 30 August.)
