An evening of politics and poetry with Kanak independence activist
DEWE GORODE
Dewe Gorode is a leading member of the independence movement in Kanaky (New
Caledonia). Dewe was a founder of the Party for Kanak Liberation (Palika)
and the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS). She is a teacher
and poet, politician and activist, a founder of the Kanak Popular Schools
movement and author of short stories and poetry in English, French and
Paici. Following the signing of the 1998 Noumea Accord, Dewe was elected to
the new Congress, and last year was elected as Vice President of the
Government of New Caledonia.
Since the violent clashes of the 1980s, this French colony has dropped from
the news - but the Kanak independence struggle continues. Join us to hear
from this inspiring Pacific leader.
(Dewe will be speaking in a personal capacity, as an activist from Palika).
Venue: Australian Volunteers International (AVI)
88 Kerr Street, Fitzroy (near Brunswick Street)
