Debt has crippled many of the world's poor countries for decades.
Massive debt repayments have an impact on millions of poor
people, by diverting government funds from vital social services and
economic infrastructure.
Meanwhile, international currency speculation contributes to
market instability - instability which translates into enormous
profits for the speculators who make money from money alone.
But as the Southeast Asian, Russian and Mexican financial crises
demonstrated, the impact on the real people who live in those
economies is enormous when currency speculators rapidly pull out
their funds in search of greater profits elsewhere.
So what should Australia be doing about these issues? Where do
our political parties stand on the solutions which have been
proposed to reform the international economy - solutions such as
the Tobin Tax and the Heavily Indebted Poor Country Initiative?
Come to this pre-election forum to hear from and question
representatives of the major political parties on their position on
these issues, and how they believe Australia should be responding
to the challenges of globalisation.
A panel will lead questioning of the speakers and tease out key
issues for discussion.

Kelvin Thomson, Australian Labor Party

This forum is part of Oxfam Community Aid Abroad's "Vote Global"
Campaign. The organisation is urging voters and politicians to think
outside their own backyards in the federal election on issues
including Australia's treatment of asylum seekers, overseas aid,
Indigenous rights, third world debt, human rights, the UN, corporate
responsibility and fair trade.
