::NONVIOLENT INTERVENTION IN CONFLICT ZONES::
PROTECTIVE ACCOMPANIMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN COLOMBIA

working in areas of intense political repression.

in Colombia and the current human rights situation in Colombia and
Guatemala.

PBI is an independent, grassroots organisation that provides
nonviolent protective accompaniment to human rights workers,
lawyers, unionists, church leaders, women's organisations and
displaced communities who fear for their lives. PBI's international
volunteers in Colombia physically accompany the threatened person
wherever they go, stay at their homes overnight, sit outside their
offices, remaining at their side until the death threats diminish.

According to Amnesty International, the human rights crisis in
Colombia has reached 'alarming proportions'. As the killing of human
rights defenders and the forced exile of others in Colombia has
continued, there has been an increase in the demand for the
international protective accompaniment offered by PBI.

In June this year Eve Scarfe was part of the PBI mission to
Guatemala to review the situation in the light of requests by
Guatemalan organizations to re-open the PBI project there.

International awareness and concern strengthens PBI's protective
presence in Colombia and other countries. Come along and support the
struggle for peace, human rights and social justice in Central
America.
