MELBOURNE - WALKOUT OF SCHOOL TO STOP WAR AND RACISM
THURSDAY OCTOBER 18
1:30pm @ Flinders St Station
With Bush waging war on the people of Afghanistan and the Middle
East, racist attacks on Muslims and people of Middle Eastern
appearance are on the increased, with hundreds of hate crimes
reported in the last monrth since the terrorist attacks on the US.
John Howard has announced his support for US war, and has based his
entire election campiagn on racist scapegoating and warmongering.
With increased military spending, we can expect funding cuts to
education, healthcare and the rest of the public sector, and attacks
on our democratic rights, too. Of course, young people will bear the
brunt of these attacks: we don't even have the right to vote, we are
blamed for unemployment and crime. Conscription will even be on the
cards if Howard gets his way.
Already, millions of people live in desperate poverty, thousands die from
preventable diseases and starvation and thousands of Afghani civilians are
fleeing from the horrific conditions of the Taliban. War will inevetibaly
increase poverty, injustice and human rights violations and lead to more
loss of innocent lives.War will also exacerbate the conditions which create
refugees.
Hence, Resistance has called national high school walkouts to oppose
any notion of war, and we call on all high school students, young
people and peace supporters to participate in these actions.
In Melbourne, high school students will walkout of their classrooms and meet
at:
Flinders St Station 1:30pm
Thursday 18 October
Go to www.resistance.org.au for more info on walkouts in other cities
all over Australia.
Please forward this message to as many high school students and young
people you know - together we can build a huge peace movement that
can stop this war.
NO WAR!
NO AUSTRALIAN SUPPORT FOR WAR!
END RACIST SCAPEGOATING!
DEFEND DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS!
