In early February the Howard Government will introduce new
counter-terrorist laws into Federal Parliament. The laws are so broad in
scope that they threaten to criminalise many unions, environmental and
community organisations engaged in protest activity and industrial
action. ASIO will move from spy agency to secret police with the power
to hold people incommunicado for up to 48 hours without access to a lawyer.
It is crucial that we act now to ensure the ALP block or significantly
amend these laws in the Senate.
This meeting will discuss how unions, legal, environmental and community
groups, and concerned citizens can work together to defend fundamental
rights to freedom of expression, assembly, association and privacy.
