Hegel, ZiZek & "Zeitgeist"
Summer School at the University of Melbourne
with Paul Ashton, Neli Nanovska-Krasteva, Geoff Boucher, Andy Blunden
and Davie MacLean
9am-5pm, Friday 22/02/2002
Hegel (1770-1831) was a major influence on Marx, as well as contemporary
thinkers such as Derrida and ZiZek. It was Hegel for example who
introduced the idea of Zeitgeist (or Spirit of the Times) in which the
science, culture, ethics, etc of a given society are seen a historically
developing entity. The seminar will introduce the principal ideas of
Hegel and then consider the "spirit" of our times, and analyse where
some present day thinkers, influenced by Hegel, are going.
