Thanks to everyone who voted for, campaigned for or otherwise supported
the Socialist Alliance in the Moreland and Darebin council elections
last weekend.
An excellent total of 1608 people voted socialist across just six wards.
Our campaign focused heavily on welcoming refugees, defending public
transport and the Merri Creek, and on the need for councils that would
mobilise the community to fight for better funding for services.
In Moreland our results were:
Merri ward -- Judy McVey 374 votes, 5.5%.
Hoffman ward -- Jonathan Sherlock 340 votes, 5.4%.
(Both candidates easily saved their deposits.)
In Darebin our results were:
Rucker ward -- Patrick McLiesh 297, 3.8%.
Cazaly ward -- Fouli Christmann 275 votes, 3.3%.
Barunah ward -- Graham Matthews 195 votes, 2.5%.
James ward -- Natalie Zirngast 127 votes, 1.8%.
Moreland voting was at booths, Darebin was postal. In all wards we
preferenced the Greens ahead of Labor.
The Socialist Alliance will be standing in seats across Melbourne and
Geelong in the state election. Branches are active supporting the
refugee campaign and May Day.
